What will happen next if you are approved for Social Security Disability benefits?
If you are approved for benefits, you will receive a monthly payment from the Social Security Administration. You should expect to received your first benefit during the sixth full month after the date your disability began. If your disability is found to have begun before you were determined eligible for benefits, the Social Security Administration will pay you retroactively for up to one year prior to the date of the claim.
Since Social Security Disability benefits are funded by Social Security taxes, your monthly benefit amount is based on your average lifetime earnings. These monthly benefits will continue until you reach retirement age, at which time your benefits will become retirement benefits in the same amount.
